Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Nimitz - Astrometrics lab - CSO Holis Gralen -0925) After Holis had finished configuring the system he began inputting buffer values for the sensor systems of the various starships that might cross their path within the system and quickly found that he had taken on a Herculean task, there were too many ships with too many values to process efficiently and it wasn't a simple matter of blowing off enough energy for the highest values since it was unlikely they could use that much power even with the help of the solar flares. Starships with different mission configurations for example might have stronger buffer support with the scientific and explorer classes ahving the hardiest protections while the warships opted for lighter buffers because of the heavier overall ships' shielding and systems armoring. The Betazoid stopped whistling and slouched down over the console for a long moment, he could sense Pauls' questioning thought behind him as he considered the quandry, time was wasting and he needed a plan of action; something had to be done to whittle down the voluminous list. He finally let out an explosive breath and turned around to the Tac/Sec Chief. "We are in a catch 22 situation here, I actually have too much information and it's damming up the works; you're a tactical officer Paul; What do you think are the most likely classes and configurations of ships we'll meet up with when we hit the system?" (Reply: Paul Casely) (Posted by Charles) Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Nimitz - Astrometrics lab - TAC/SC - Ensign {SG} Paul Casely -0931) Paul worked on various aspects of his plan while Holis programmed. Finally, he heard Holis. "We are in a catch 22 situation here, I actually have too much information and it's damming up the works; you're a tactical officer Paul; What do you think are the most likely classes and configurations of ships we'll meet up with when we hit the system?" "How many ship configurations can be inputted?" asked Paul. (Reply Holis) "If I were a betting man, I'd say they would have Sovereign Class ships, possibly Galaxy class ones as they still have about 50 years left of refit life. Perhaps Steamrunner, Akira, Defiant, Intrepid, Springfield or Prometheus are running primary or escort duty. If I were a betting man, I'd say Sovereign class with a compliment of Defiant, Steamrunner and Akira class vessels as backup. This is hard... we are just kind of guessing," said Paul, "Does that help at all?" (Reply Holis) "Well, we really should apprise K'ven of what's going on. And we have about 2 and a half hours before we make our presentation to the Captain," said Paul feeling a bit of pressure. (Reply Holis) (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Nimitz - Battle Bridge - Strat Ops - Sogh la' K'ven - 1005) K'ven had waited on anyone from the bridge or engineering or anyone to arrive to see what the readings were on the systems. He finally had enough, so, he moved from one system to another reading what was on their monitors. He felt lucky that each one had come across as functional and without any errors. He had then moved back to the command chair to compose a report to Sash when he heard the doors open. He did not even bother to look up to see who it was; they would speak soon enough, he was sure. "Sir, if you check your PADD, you'll find the current working tactical plan for diversion. I'd appreciate any suggestions or additions. I know you need the information so you can transmit it to the Boudicca and integrate it with the overall Strategical Plan with both ships," said Paul. K'ven finished what the report and sent it to Sash, then looked at his PADD for what Paul had been saying. He scanned over the information and wondered how important that this Sevant really was that Paul and Holis would think they would have such fire power to keep him. "So, you think they would have this sort of configuration for one man?" K' ven grumbled out as he sat back in the chair looking at Paul. (Casely) "Ok, if you think so, but, I also want you to come up with just the necessary configuration that could possibly hold him against the Nimitz. Seeing that the Boudicca will be cloaked, they may not have a large contingent." K'ven thought for a moment, "Also, I need a conjecture of what they could have just out of sensor range as we arrive but close enough to arrive in time to help them." (Casely) (USS Nimitz - Main bridge - Strat Ops - Sogh la' K'ven - 1706) K'ven watched as the Ensign Sash had told him about walked out onto the bridge. As tall as the Ensign was, K'ven still was a bit taller. K'ven was made of muscle and grit where as this Ensign was a bit gangly, but, K'ven knew better than to underestimate him. Vulcans were known to be stronger than they looked. K'ven watched as the ensign surveyed the bridge then, finding the captain, walked over to him. "Captain Ensign T'pau Vorik reporting in as ordered Sir." The Ensign said as he stopped in front of Sash. Sash stood up slowly and stretched his back, then looked down at the new Ensign and smiled. "Ah yes, the infamous Ensign Vorik. Welcome aboard. Please, come with me." Sash headed for his ready room. "Mr. K'ven you have the bridge." "Aye sir" K'ven replied as he got up and moved to the Command Chair. (Reply Casely, any) (Posted by Frank) Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Nimitz - Battle Bridge - TAC/SC - Ensign {SG} Casely - 1025) "So, you think they would have this sort of configuration for one man?" K'ven grumbled out as he sat back in the chair looking at Paul. Paul did a double take at that question. ~Who the hell does he think he is to question the worth of one of our officers.~ "Yes Sir. We don't make it a habit of leaving our officers behind to be tortured and killed. I also think the Boudicca will be better off with her Captain back." "Ok, if you think so, but, I also want you to come up with just the necessary configuration that could possibly hold him against the Nimitz. Seeing that the Boudicca will be cloaked, they may not have a large contingent." K'ven thought for a moment, "Also, I need a conjecture of what they could have just out of sensor range as we arrive but close enough to arrive in time to help them." "I'll speak to Captain Sash about that. Thank you," stated Paul as he left the battle bridge. He wondered if K'ven had bothered to clear his instructions with the Captain. Paul would spend the next hour and a half looking into what K'ven asked for however. In the hallway, Paul turned to Holis, "Well, that was pleasant. I should probably go and firm up a few things before giving my report to Captain Sash. Let me know if you encounter any further difficulties or successes." (Reply Holis) (USS Nimitz - Captain's Ready Room - TAC/SC - Ensign {SG} Casely - 1159) Paul strolled down the hallway and pressed the doorchime to the Captain's ready room and waited. In a second the door slid open and Paul walked in. "Sir, I have that preliminary report for you," he said, handing the captain a PADD. (Reply Sash) "Basically, Doctor Gralen and I have devised a modification to several probes. We started the procedure last night with Ensign O'Neill redesigning six of them so their sensors react in a proper fashion with each other. The general idea is to make the probes look like ships so we have a fleet. We chose several 'classic' configurations. The doctor says there is a solar flare which will actually aid our surprise," stated Paul. (Reply Sash) Paul nodded, "Sir, we've designed the probes with an extra surprise. Doctor Gralen has found a way to make them give off an EM pulse that should disrupt some of the enemy ship's functions. They will, of course, eventually see through our ruse, but there is a chance we can do a fair bit of damage before it really becomes a major issue." (Reply Sash) "Well Sir, I did show things to K'ven, I'm not sure that he's transmitted the plan information to the Boudicca. That was the real reason I discussed that with him. I'm not sure he understood that. I would imagine things run very differently on a Klingon ship," stated Paul raising his eyebrows slightly. (Reply Sash) (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Boudicca- Holodeck 2- Lt Dru Tagon- 1515) Tagon listened as Major Straton began to organize the team. "Lt. Stolev, you and your people are in charge of finding Sevant and subverting any security systems in the facility. Lt. Tagon, your assistance in those regards will also be helpful." Tagon nodded in acknowledgement. It wasn't a surprise, but was encouraged that he had actually been counted in the group. "The two CE's are carrying a jump point. A portable short range transporter. Once we find Captain Sevant and get him to a defendable location they will set up the jump point, if normal transport is blocked due to hostile interference, and get him back to the ship. Questions so far?" Before anyone could say anything he heard Drzzt's voice call out, "Too bad. Welcome to hell." Suddenly the holodeck grid vanished and the party found themselves in a heavily forested area. Tagon looked around slowly, looking for where they might be, and where they might need to go. He pulled out his tricorder. He was definitely impressed by this program. It even gave readings on his tricorder. "Cooper, where the hell are we?" Stolev asked. "Looks like we're a little over 3 kilometers off from our projected beam-in point," she reported. "The facility where the Captain is likely held is located that way," she said, pointing to the west. "Maybe there was some sort of transporter interference? A scattering field perhaps?" Tagon continued his scan. There was some kind of artificial field that would prevent them from beaming in or out of this area. "Well, at least it looks like the whole group is still together. I suppose that's something. What else do you have, Ensign?" Cooper tapped a few buttons on the tricorder. "Well, the good news is, we appear to be a bit outside their security perimiter. I'm picking up several security patrols on the tricorder but they're all at least a kilometer away." As stolev listened to reports Tagon noticed something strange on his tricorder. There were several groups of life signs heading in their direction. It looked like they were trying to be inconspicuous, and go in a round about route. But they were obviously getting closer. He reached over and tapped on Cooper's tricorder, and she was seeing the same thing. "Uh, sir," interjected Cooper. "Looks like they already know we're here." She pointed to several flashing dots on her screen. "These groups have started to move in our direction." As she moved her finger to indicate the current position of the team, the flashing dots began to vanish. "Looks like they've got biomasking equipment, too." "Figures," replied Stolev. "Let's get our own biomaskers active and head out. We're sitting ducks here." Tagon smiled. It wasn't easy to mask the lifesigns of a Brikarian. Although stealth was not his forte, he did have a few tricks up his sleave. He moved quickly, and more quietly than one might have thought possible. Before anyone could say anything, he was gone. He tapped a button on his tricorder and made an adjustment. The uniform he was wearing suddenly changed. Between the hue of his uniform and his own rock like hide, Tagon blended in with the surroundings. He might as well be cloaked. He stood still, and waited for the first patrol to pass by. There was only five of them. They moved incredibly silently. In fact, he was almost startled as the first on went by. He thought for sure that they had picked up his life signs, but the masker had been functioning enough. As the last of the patrol went by, Tagon moved. He needed to take the patrol out without bringing attnetion to himself. The only sound that could be heard was the rustling of the plants and Tagon's strikes. In moments, the entire patrol was laying unconscious. He hefted the bodies into his arms and brought them over to Stolev and Straton. As he dropped the bodies he said, "I thought these might come in handy." (reply stolev, Straton, any) (posted by Al Muir) Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Boudicca - Holodeck 2 - TAC/ASC Lt Stolev - Day 2 - 1530) "These groups have started to move in our direction." As Cooper moved her finger to indicate the current position of the team, the flashing dots began to vanish. "Looks like they've got biomasking equipment, too." "Figures," replied Stolev. "Let's get our own biomaskers active and head out. We're sitting ducks here." He pulled out his own tricorder and glanced in the direction of the compound. "Tagon, what do think..." he began, turning to where the large Brikarian had been standing a moment ago, only to find that he had disappeared. "Where'd Tagon go?" he asked, looking around the group. The only responses were shrugs. "Sir," offered Murtagh, "this actually isnae a bad defensible position." He indicated the rocky overhang where they had taken shelter, plus a few thicker groves of trees nearby. "We could ambush some of these patrols here and have an easier time of it on the way to that fortress." Stolev looked around, nodding in agreement. "Major Stratton, this is your show, but I suggest we take up defensive positions in this area. We already know the enemy forces are coming our way, so it might make our trip to the fortress a bit easier." (reply Stratton) Stolev and Stratton headed together for a position up above the rocky overhang, finding a nice spot where they would be concealed while still having a good view of the area. They crouched down, phasers ready, and waited. After a few minutes, Stolev nearly jumped out of his skin as he heard several loud thuds behind them. He and Stratton wheeled around, phasers at the ready, to find Tagon standing there in front of a pile of unconscious bodies. "I thought these might come in handy," he deadpanned. Stolev looked at Stratton. "Well, I guess that takes care of one of the patrols," he remarked. Before anyone could respond, there was a loud explosion nearby and the sound of phaser fire filled the air. Stolev dove back to his previous position, scanning the clearing through the sights of the phaser rifle. "And here's the other one," he muttered as he targetted one of the marines in the patrol and squeezed the trigger. (reply Stratton, Tagon, bad guys, any) (posted by Aaron Scifres) Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Boudicca - Holodeck 2 - Lt Dru Tagon - Day 2 - 1534) The concusion from the explossion caused Tagon to almost lose his balance. The second marine patrol seemed to be putting everything into this one assault as there was phaser fire from all around them. This didn't make sense to Tagon, but he was too busy reacting right now to worry about it. A phaser shot hit him in the shoulder, stinging him. ~Real pahser fire, on heavy stun!~ he smiled. Now this was his kind of training. The second shot actually hurt. Tagon turned and drew his own phaser and dropped a marine. Still, something just didn't seem right. A marine popped up behind the Brikar, in full BDU. He proceded to make a grab for him. Tagon moved with a swiftness one would not expect of something his size. He dodged the grab and got hold of body armor. He lifted the marine up, and threw him away, leaving the imprints of his hands on the armor. Looking around Tagon could see that they seemed to actually be holding their own against the marine forces. That was when the strangeness hit him. Why would they put everything into a single pronged attack. He would never do that. That realization came just a little too late, as reinforcements came from their now exposed flank. A second team arrived to support the initial drive. Tagon watched as the team fell, one by one. He saw a marine come behind Straton, who was already fending off two others. He was about to hit her with what appeared to be some form of disrptor unit, for her own BDU. With a roar, Tagon charged the marine. The third phaser shot the marine got off slowed him down, but not enough. For the marine, to see a moving boulder, charging at you, screaming, was more than just a little disconcerting. Tagon threw a punch that almost went through the body armor. It was enough to get the marine to back off, but not enough to keep Straton from falling to another assault. Then it seemed as if they attack began to focus on Tagon. Round after round of phaser fire hit him until he was on his knees. His last vision, before the blackness overwhelmed him, was of Stolev, still fighting, surrounded by a dozen unconscious bodies. She keyed up her messages and saw one from the Captain. "Dear Ms. Ensign Bix, Thank you for your note earlier. It was most informative, and looked great. All of your recomendations have been noted and will be implemented. I also want to say what a wonderful job you're doing with all of the Ops things you do. I hope to see you at the billiards tournament tomorrow. Captain Devan Sash" ~Is he asking me on a date?! He says he'll see me at the billards tournament!!!~ thought Bixx feeling her face flush. Then she looked again at the message and her happiness began to sour, ~BiX... he spelled my name wrong! You'd think if he liked me he would at least spell my name properly! Men!~ Dartena thought. His message had sounded promising... and he was very attractive, even if he was an older man... but he would have to learn to spell her name! Overlooking the proper way to spell the name of someone you liked was not... right! ~How would he like it if I spelled his name wrong?! Humph.~ With that, Dartena hit the reply button on her console and sent back the reponse, "ACKNOWLEDGED." ~If he doesn't pick up on THAT cold shoulder then he must be kind of dense.~ thought Dartena, going back to work. Stardate:2406.11.25 (USS Nimitz - Ready Room - CO - Captain Devan Sash- 1549) "ACKNOWLEDGED." The read out on his screen blinked the single word from Bixx. Curious. ~Does that mean she'll be there or she won't.~ Bolians were a different species by far. Most willing to serve and be helpful. Bixx has been no exception to that, as Sash had noticed over the course of the day. He assumed, therefore, that it was an acceptance. He sent her back a message. "I look forward to seeing you then Ms. Bixx." He punched in the send key and thought that something looked funny in the name. He guessed it was nothing and went back to his report. She opened up the message: "I look forward to seeing you then Ms. Bixx." It was from the Captain. He had corrected his error concerning her name she noticed and he said he looked forward to seeing her there... he definitely was proposing a date! Maybe the previous message had been a typo. Dartena knew that when she typed too fast she sometimes left out letters and such. She surpressed a giggle. She would have to ensure that she could find a nice dress for herself to wear to this Billiards thing... whatever that was. Dartena suddenly felt very excited. She had only just joined the bridge crew and now she already had a date with the captain! ~How wonderful!~ she thought. Dartena began running through possibilities for what she would wear. Obviously she was to meet him at the Billiards. What was a billiards? Was it like a dancing ball? Or a play of some sort? She was sure it would be wonderful one way or another. She hoped there was dancing, Dartena loved dancing. She quickly keyed back the message, "I will be happy to be there with you Captain," grinning the whole time. With that thought, Dartena began happily keying in power requirement changes for the following day, not noticing that the way she was doing it was causing the beeping to resemble the beat and tempo of a Strauss Waltz. Though athletic, he was no marine, a fact that would be immediately obvious to even an untrained eye. He further knew that there was no use in posturing; doing so would certainly earn him little but the contempt of the jarheads. Instead, he tried his level best to go on about his business as if he visited marine country every day. Spotting a private coming the other way down the hall, he hailed the man. "Excuse me, marine. Where will I find Major Stratton?" The man answered smartly, as was to be expected. Of course, they both knew that Talda could have gotten the major's location from the computer, but this way, Caleb hoped he would get a warning if it was a bad time to visit - the computer certainly wouldn't provide him with that piece of information. Being as the marine simply gave him directions, Caleb took that as a good sign. In short order, he found himself face to face with Major Stratton, she of minor infamy. Swallowing, Talda snapped to attention. "Ensign Talda, ASCO, reporting, sir!" Inwardly, he hoped this his academy-polished mannerisms, which made him a small joke among the rest of the crew, would appeal somewhat to the marine officer's sense of discipline. He offered a PADD to the major. "Commander West asked me to give you a copy of my preliminary reports on our target system. From this far out, it's not a lot, but everything I have is in there. As soon as I can give you more useful information regarding the planet and its surface, I will make sure you get a copy. Is there anything in particular you need, Major?" (reply Stratton) "Aye, sir!" the ensign answered, his mouth suddenly a bit dry. Relieved, he turned and left marine country. (posted by Olan Suddeth) Stardate:2406.11.26 (USS Boudicca, Ten Forward, Ensign Caleb Talda, 01.07) Caleb sat alone, staring out into space, sipping a cup of hot tea. He had toyed with the idea of something much stronger, but being as tomorrow promised to be such a busy day, he had elected to instead go with something relaxing. Though off duty, the ASCO mentally rechecked his to-do list one more time. He had belatedly thought to drop a copy of his report off for Doctor Monroe after visiting with Major Stratton. Since all hell had broken loose previously, he had seen very little of the CSO, but assumed she would want to be kept abreast of his activities. The xenobiology lab beckoned to him, whispering that he should come and check the latest progressions on his theoretical models of the lifeforms that might be present on the planet's surface, but he was simply too tired right now. As he gazed into the distance, a bit of melancholy began to drift across the ensign. The past couple of weeks had been very exciting and busy, filled with the grind of learning a new schedule, adapting to new surroundings, and meeting new faces - and of course, there was the immediate crises at hand - but for the first time since boarding the Boudicca, Caleb became acutely aware of just how lonely he was. Talda had always been a social creature, but he had been so busy with his new duties that he hadn;t really had a good opporuntity to make any friends. Jak had been posted to first watch, and the difference in schedules and departments, along with what surely had to be a hectic time for the Bolian ensign, as well, had conspired to ensure that they hadn't even seen each other since coming aboard. Before he knew it, Caleb had audibly sighed. ~I wonder what sort of social life there is on this ship - when we aren't looking for our MIA CO, that is.~ He grinned ruefully. ~Maybe the redhead in biophysics will have some free time after this mission?~ Yep. He sent the return transmission a set of coordinates where they could meet up with the Nimitz. In all that time, she found that there was very little, officially, known about the planet they were headed to. However, there did seem to be quite a bit of speculation as to why there was so little information. She sat back up in her chair and stretched her back. She blew a lock of hair away, that had fallen across her face. She caught her reflection in the monitor and stuck her tongue out at herself. It had been too long since she'd had a chance to be with Domino. Now it seemed that the counselor was avoiding her. maybe that was just her own insecurities. It was that marine, Kane, and he was trying to leave. Without thinking, she ran to try and stop him. "Doctor!" Standing in front of the door to sickbay, her hands on her hips, defiantly, she ordered him to stop. "Just where do you think you're going." Kane stopped before the nurse. Looking down on her from his height. flexing his muscles showing that he had healed rapidly. The nurse would be no match for Kane, but she wasn't an enemy. "Fullfilling my duty," Kane simply said. He then reached out his hand to push her aside. Sanders knew, especially after the last 12 hours, that physically she was no challenge to this marine. To most normal men, she was not a physical pressence. But she did not get to be the Charge nurse on a Sovereign class starship by being a pushover. And, after all, this was still a marine. "You watch where you put that hand, bub," she narrowed her eyes and looked directly into his, "or you may be pulling back a stump. You're ...."duty"... is to stay in that bed until you've been released by the doctor, and no sooner. So you march your fanny back over there and lay down. Now soldier!" Confusion struck Kane. He was trained to listen to superiors only. "As far as I know, I was never trained to lay down on a bed." Kane said in a dead tone voice. "I don't see the efficiency to protect a ship and it's Captain by laying down on a bed. In addition, I was ordered to take orders from the Captain and Major Dorkin, not from a doctor." To Kane it was all logic thinking according to his knowledge. He was still uneducated on social abilities, and used facts to make conversations. ~How dense can a guy get?~ She was starting to get irritated so logic soon flew out the window. She began to poke Kane in the chest, causing him to back up, more out of surprise than anything else. She imagined he couldn't believe that he was being assaulted by such a small person. "Look here, you... you marine," she sputtered, "you are trained to follow the orders of any superior officer. And on top of that, you'd better learn to listen to any medical staff, if you want fixed up right next time. And on top of that, if you don't learn how to listen to me the only thing you'll be protecting is the inside of a brig cell. Are you catching my drift mister?" At that, Dr. Kinkaid came running into the room. "What the hell is going on in here?" Then he saw Kane, not only out of bed, but apparently trying to leave sick bay. No matter what enhancements he had, BigWill knew that the marine was not equipped to deal with Janet Sanders. He came to the big marine's rescue, trying hard to supress a smile. "I'll take over from here Lt,." he smiled down at the woman that he had come to know well over the past months. She looked back up at him, as if for a moment contemplating going off on him aswell. Then she turned on her heel with a humph and stormed off, muttering to herself. "Think he can just walk our of my sickbay does he. Well,. he's just got another thought ..." as she turned into another room the rest of what she was saying got lost. Kinkaid turned to Kane. "Mr. Kane, I see that your feeling much better. You're a brave man to face Lt. Sanders, unarmed." He chortled at his own joke, and noticed that Kane did not join in. "Yes, well," he continued, " come on back to the biobed so I can give you a once over." "She's a minor threat, she would have lost the fight in less then 5 seconds." Kane said as he followed Kinkaid. "If you knew her, marine," Kinkaid said, you might not make such a bold statement." Kinkaid pulled out his tricorder and began to scan Kane, from top to bottom. He had already discovered, over the course of the night, that Kane had some amazing regenerative properties. It was as if he had something inside him, repairing damaged tissue artificially. In fact, he had done little to help in his recovery. Kane's body did it all by itself. He also made note of several "enhancements" to the marines body. These were some serious enhancements aswell. On the borg level. But not borg technology. He had researching the work, in fact, before he came in to rescue Kane from the nurse. "You had us worried for a while there, Mr. Kane," he said off handed, while continuing to scan. "Most people would have died from the injuries you suffered. Yet, you don't seem to have a broken bone, or barely even a bruise remaining. How is that?" "I don't know." Kane said remembering his flashback. After a short silence he continued. "Doctor, I have to conclude that this small talk isn't positive towards my recovery, and thus to my duty, could you speed it up and handle this so I can get back to duty?" "My you are an impatient one aren't you," Kinkaid said. "do you know why most doctors engage their patients in "small talk." Think about it from a logistical point of view. You have had a head trauma. What do you think I'm trying to find out, by "small talk?"" "You are trying to distract the patient from his duty at hand."he replied. "You're duty is to heal your patients, not distract them Kinkaid almost laughed. "Well, perhaps logistics isn't your strong point. We are trying to see if our patients can make a connection the the conversation, or if there is any further damage that has gone undetected. As I'm wondering right now." "As for my question to the disposition of your, "enhancement", well I don't consider that small talk." "It will remain a question, for I myself don't know the answer." Kane looked at the doctor. No emotion showing on his face. Kane didn't feel regret for his lost memory, he didn't even know what regret was. Kinkaid stepped back, looking intently at the readings of the tricorder. "Hmmm... so you have no memory of anything? What is the earliest memory you have?" "I was somewhere on a planet. It was dark and it was raining. I could hear screaming and yelling. The next thing I knew, a marine stood in front of me, his gun ready to fire. I attacked him, since he was wounded, and wouldn't be able to fire in time. When he was down more of them attacked me, untill I felt something stinging me. Next thing I woke up in a brig, where scientist were investigating me." "A flash back?" Kinkaid looked up from his tricorder. "Care to share?" "I was on a ship of some sort, very ravaged, cables could be seen, smoke everywhere. I was making my way slowly, without making any sound, looking behind every corner, my weapon at the ready. When suddenly someone grabbed my shoulder. I shook myself loose and punched him in the ribs. He landed a few feet away, but when I looked at him, he didn't seemed human, and then it stopped, and I found myself back in the brig on this ship." "And that's it?" Kinkaid asked, as he began to scan the marine's head. He could see that Kane was beginning to get a bit agitated, and stopped. "Look, I can't say that I'm not worried about this amnesia thing. You have no memories of your life, a substantial part of your life. How many years of memory is that, maybe 5? As far as I can tell, helath wise, there's no reason to keep you in sickbay. You're as healthy as the proverbial Kaladonian ox. But I want to get to the bottom of this memory loss." "8 years 3 months and 10 days to be exact." Kane said plainly. "But I do not see the connection between my health and the proverbial kaladonian ox. Also, my memory loss hasn't interfered with my duty, so I don't se it nessesary to investigate it." "If you ," Kinkaid said calmly, "as a marine, don't see the potential security threat in that situation, then perhaps I should relieve you of duty. Zzt's pounding might have affected you worse than I thought." "You can't relieve me of duty, I have orders to protect the Captain and his ship. I'm able to perform my duties with no loss of efficiency." "I am Chief Medical Officer on this ship," Kinkaid announced, "and if I feel that anyone, including the captain, is incapable, or unsafe in performing their duties, I can and will relieve them of their duties. Do you understand marine?" "A Captain is the highest ranking officer on a ship, unless there is a visitor on board, I do not see how a doctor can command a Captain." "What you see, or understand is irrelevant in this matter. Perhaps what I should do, is relieve you of your duty until you have fully digested the Starfleet regulations." "Digest regulations? Regulations aren't edible Doctor. I know starfleet regulations, but why would starfleet let a doctor command a ship when the Captain is unavailable to?" "Perhaps because I am also the second officer on this ship!" Kane snapped to attention, and stood to his full height. "Sorry Sir, I didn't realise it Sir." Kane said in a full, loud voice. Kinkaid shook his head. "At ease soldier. Tell me do you plan on giving every officer on this ship a hard time?" "My apologies Sir, I didn't mean to Sir." The doctor sighed deeply. "Never mind. Listen, I want to see you in here tomorrow. And that means I want to examine you, not just look up to see you here. Tomorrow, or you're confined to quarters. Got it?" "Sir yes Sir!!" "Now get out of my sight before I change my mind," Kinkaid dismissed him. Kane walked out of sickbay and went to his quarters. As he left Kinkaid tapped his comm badge. She wanted to make sure that she looked just perfect for Devan. She giggled to herself as she tried on another pair of earrings. The dress she had decided to wear was definitely not regulation, but she didn't suppose it mattered. She was, afterall, off duty. The black strapless number accented her more... tangible attributes. Considering a second, she spritzed herself with her favourite scent and clasped a dainty, yet fashionable, necklace around her neck. Now it was time to apply her makeup. She wanted this to be perfect. Dartena had long been good at applying just enough to accentuate her better facial features, while not overdoing it. She didn't want to look ridiculous afterall She look at herself in the mirror and smiled. It had taken the last hour, but she was finally happy with her look. (USS Nimitz - Holodeck - OPS - Ensign {SG} Dartena Bixx - 1952) Dartena walked through the holodeck door. She saw several officers had arrived, including the grumpy Klingon. He seemed preoccupied with figuring out exactly what the game was. She didn't know it herself and didn't much care. She was here to be with Devon. She walked up to him and gently patted his arm. She looked up at him and smiled. "Hello!" she said happily and smiling in a demure way at the Captain, "I've been really looking forward to this. I hope you have been too." 'Reminder,' the screen read 'Captain's social gathering in holodeck.' Harrison finished what he was doing stood and made his way towards the holodecks. (USS Nimitz - Holodeck - COUNS - Ensign John Harrison - 1950) The doors slid aside and Harrison was greeted by a pool room and his commanding officer. Harrison looked at the remarkable holographic pool table and grinned. Back in London, on many social gatherings of his own, he and his friends had always ended up in the same place - a pub with an antique pool table. Since Harrison had been quite well known at that pub, mainly due to the respect surrounding his father, he and his friends had been allowed to use the table when they weren't TOO intoxicated. Harrison was truly awful at pool. He would be the first to admit it. He had many stories about trick shots that had culminated in him sinking two of his opponent's balls, followed by the white ball. And yet, whenever he saw a pool table, he grinned and developed an urge to play. ~Pool is not about winning or losing~ He thought ~It's about socialising.~ He walked up to the Captain. "Good evening, sir," he said. (reply Sash, any) (posted by James Batchelor) Stardate:2406.11.26 (USS Nimitz - Holodeck - CO - Captain Devan Sash - 1945) Sash stood back and looked at his handiwork. It had been a while since he'd played with the holodeck programming. But this was an old program. One that he had created in his academy days. His roommate, Fred Marston, had introduced him to a lot of things, including the game of pool. With his inate geometric and spacial abilities it didn't take long for the Angossian to become pretty good. In fact, he managed to beat everone that Marston regularly played. It was then that he concocted the scheme for Sash to "hustle" other cadets for, what Marsten called "credits". Sash just enjoyed playing. It was like a battle simulation, using balls instead of ships. It didn't take long before Sash had beaten everyone, except for the Academy champion. that was a game that went down in the anals of the rec hall history. The champ was hot, but Sash got a lucky break and made the next 50 shots without missing. It was then that he found out that Marsten had been betting behind his back. Sash lost that game to a very relieved champion. However, they did have a rematch after he figured out that Sash had let him win. It was just the two of them, late in the evening, no audience, no bets, no pressure. Sash "beat the pants off him". However, nobody ever knew, except the two of them. It had been a while since Sash had played the game. Since many of his crew had never played before, some didn't even know about the game, he decided to simplify matters somewhat. The tournament was going to be simple, stripes and solids. Seven striped balls, seven solid balls, and the 8 ball. The first one to sink all their balls wins. Seemed simple enough. Sash walked over to the wall and picked out a cue. He strolled around the room, feeling the felt on the tables. When he got the feel for the tables he got set at one of the tables, lined up the cue ball and broke a rack of balls. The sound of the crack or the balls striking one another brought back the old feelings. He smiled as the one ball teetered on the edge of a pocket, then fell in. He continued to sink the rest of the balls as he waited for the others to show up. (USS Nimitz - Holodeck 1 - Miles O'Neill - 1951) Miles always loved the game of pool, ever since he played with his dad at the age of 7. He played as much as he could, and was a pretty good player, able to beat a few cadets in the academy. However, he wasn't good enough to beat some of the really good players then, however Miles felt that he could beat a few of his fellow shipmates. Miles entered the holodeck, to find Sash and Harrison already in there. "Hello Captain, Mr. Harrison." Miles said, as he moved towards one of the chairs and sat down. He did not want Sash to order him to be there again, so, he reluctantly decided that he would show up. He did not know what this 'Billiards' was, but, he would find out. He walked in to see that the captain and counselor already had arrived. He looked around to see on the wall a few racks with different sized sticks in them. K'ven figured that they could be weapons of some sort, but, were flimsy weapons at most. They were a bit thicker at one end and tapered the length to a smaller size at the opposite end. Then there several tables in the room with something green on top of them. They were kinda small for any regular fighting, but, he thought that the green stuff was there to soak up the blood of your opponent. He also figured that the type of material it was, kept you from sliding on the blood. He had no idea what the balls with the different colors and strips were for, unless you had to fight without tripping on them. He walked over to the captain and Counselor after picking up one of the thickest sticks he could find. "Excuse me sir, but, these weapons don't seem very formitable to fight with. Do you only fight one opponent on the table at a time or more as you continue?" K'ven asked curiously. (Reply from Sash, any) (posted by Frank) Stardate:2406.11.26 (USS Nimitz - Holodeck - CO - Captain Devan Sash- 1955) Sash was sinking the last balls on the table when Harrison walked up to the Captain. "Good evening, sir," he said. "Ah Counselor," Sash smiled and planted the pool cue on the floor. "Welcome to the product of my misspent academy days. Computer, rerack table 3." The balls on the table he was playing reset up in a perfect triangle. He heard the doors open agian and Miles O'Neill entered the holodeck. "Hello Captain, Mr. Harrison." Miles said, as he moved towards one of the chairs and sat down. "So, are we playing Stripes and Solids, or something else?" "Actually," Sash nodded, "that's going to be the game. i know it's basic but I realized that some of our crew may not have played before, or even know the game." The next to enter was K'ven. Sash watched as he eyed the whole room suspiciously. He'd known Klongons who'd played games like pool, but he'd never seen one actually play the game. He perused the row of cues and picked up a thick beginner cue and headed over to the group. "Excuse me sir," K'ven began, "but, these weapons don't seem very formidable to fight with. Do you only fight one opponent on the table at a time or more as you continue?" Sash was taking a drink of water as K'ven spoke and almost spat it out at the question. A good Klingon question too. Paul Casely had arrived in time for the question and Sash could see him stiffle a chuckle. "That's not exactly how the games played K'ven," Sash said gently. "I'll explain the rules when everyone else arrives." "Uh... hello everyone," Casely said to the growing group. "Paul," Sash shock the Security Chief's hand. "Welcome, welcome, we almost have enough to start." The next to arrive was Darteena Bixx. And did she ever make an entrance. The dress she wore was definitely not regulation. And she moved as if she were a mission. Her eyes seemed to lock onto Sash's as she moved past the others, ignoring their gawking stares. She looked up at Sash and smile. "Hello!" she said happily and smiling in a demure way at the Captain, "I've been really looking forward to this. I hope you have been too." Sash was shocked. It was as if he'd seen her for the first time. She looked... perfect. It was as if she were waiting for her date to arrive. The smell of her perfume caught Sash's attention, and then looking at her he got a strange feeling in the back of his mind. "Ummm..," he stammered a little, "Hi,Bixx, yeah, I have been. We've needed this for a while." Suddenly she looped her arm inside his and pressed her body against his. Kinkaid rolled in with Janet Sanders attatched at the arm. Those two were certainly becoming an item. He hoped that it wouldn't be a problem. It's always a danger whenyou're in command over your romantic interest. The doctor got a good look at Bixx and whistled. "Hey Darteena," he said teasing, "looking good." Sanders punched him in the arm, giving him a warning look. "Well she is," he said, apollogetically. then smiled at the captain, who seemed to be the recipient of her attention. Some more of the crew showed up and Sash decided it was time to start. "Okay people," be began getting everyones attention, "let me set up the ground rules for the game. I know some of you have no idea what's going on let me... excuse me, coould I have that arm back for a moment." (reply Bixx) "Let me show you what to do." He stepped up to the table with his cue stick. "The objective is to put all of the balls into the pocket, by striking this white ball, and using it to hit the others." he looked up to see several nods and even more blank stares. He was really worried when he saw K'ven, who appeared to be testing the striking capacity of the cue. "Let me demonstrate," he offered. Leaning over the table he shot the cue ball and broke the rack. He then proceded to sink a series of balls. "As you can see, it takes a little bit of precision, patience, and thought. So why don't we make this first round practice. I'll have the computer randomly select partners." "Computer, access all of the personnel present on the holodeck. Randomly select each player with a partner." There was a moment of lag time and then the computer beeped. [Partners- O'Neill and Gralen, Casely and Harrison, K'ven and Kinkaid] The computer continued until it completed the list of play partners with [Sash and Bixx.] Sash smiled at a now beaming Bixx. He didn't really enjoy billiards much and found the rules sometimes daunting. He wished that it had been called a 'pool' tournament. Pool was a much simplier game involving solids and stripes, anyone could play it. Billiards took a bit more... study. Paul walked onto the holodeck just in time to see K'ven selecting a cue. "Excuse me sir, but, these weapons don't seem very formitable to fight with. Do you only fight one opponent on the table at a time or more as you continue?" K'ven asked. Paul suppressed a chuckle. Why should people of other cultures and planets understand this sort of game? In a lot of ways it did seem kind of... pointless. Paul knew there was some mathematical skill necessary, especially angles, but in the end it didn't really have many practical applications. "Uh... hello everyone," said Paul to the growing group. But then, most of the crew seemed to be taking the opportunity of their travel time to try and relax and get their minds off the conflict to come. "Ummm... I don't. I don't even like the game to be honest with you," stated Paul, "I'm just here for the social aspects." Miles didn't even miss a beat, speaking as if he had a preprogrammed response, "Then you're in luck, I think we're playing Stripes and Solids. I'm quite fond of the game, myself." ~That doesn't sound very lucky to me. Nice to be listened to.~ "Ummm... that's nice. As I said, I'm not really very fond of pool or billiards.
